They are too numerous to name (or even to call to mind right now).
"Earth Angel" by The Penguins "Silhouette" by [sorry, I can't find it] "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)" by The Four Tops "Runaway" by Del Shannon
Thanks, BH Wilson, for hitting the nail on the head! I had the title wrong; its plural instead of singular. It appears that Herman's Hermits were not the original artists, though. After your clue, I tried again and found it in wiki:
"Silhouettes" is a song made famous by the doo-wop group The Rays in 1957. A competing version by The Diamonds was also successful. In 1965 it was a number 5 hit for Herman's Hermits, and in 1990 it was a number 10 hit in the UK for Cliff Richard. ~
Not only their first hit, but the first hit for the recording of the song that was written in 1932.

A play on "Halley's Comet". Edmund Halley had one comet, Bill Haley had a bunch of them. A crossover band, bridging the tail end of the Big Band era with the dawn of Rock 'n' Roll.
