Started as a nonsense song on the Australian version of the children's program "Play School" (despite being penned by an Englishman, Carey Blyton - nephew of the renowned children's author Enid, I taught myself to read from her books). Took on a life of it's own.

It's a nursery rhyme, dating from the days when debtors were executed in London.

    The words are

"Oranges and lemons" say the Bells of St. Clement's
"You owe me five farthings" say the Bells of St. Martin's
"When will you pay me?" say the Bells of Old Bailey
"When I grow rich" say the Bells of Shoreditch
"When will that be?" say the Bells of Stepney
"I do not know" say the Great Bells of Bow
And here comes a Candle to light you to Bed
And here comes a Chopper to Chop off your Head
    . (Anon)

    Often recited at bedtime.

Our generation were not wrapped in cotton wool and delighted in the chop of your head bit with actions.

Stan Who? Harry Belafonte did that one two years before Freberg. It's a traditional Jamaican folk song, Belafonte was the first to record it on LP in 1955.

  • I believe Belafonte's song was titled "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)" and it was a bit different.

Stan Freberg - "The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)"
