If everything just fell in your lap and you didn't have to work hard for it... would you be happy with that?

I have to do something that is quite hard, and it's very competitive....there's a lot of rejection involved...  I am wondering how I would feel if things were different, if I had a guaranteed place for what I want to do, all nicely arranged for me, without me having to put in hours or research and sending begging letters....

People who are more talented or I guess just lucky may not have to work as hard but often they still do.  Competition can really sharpen us but somehow I doubt I would do very well in work that involved that.  Not that things actually just fall in my lap but after doing my job for almost thirty years and growing with it I pretty much understand how everything here works and what to do so for some years I have no longer considered that I have to work hard for what I get but more it has just become a way of life to me when I am here at work like breathing because I am so accustomed to it.

I think we appreciate things the more we have to work for them.  Of course if you don't have anything you appreciate things more too.  But part of it is also I think being able to appreciate what we do have.  My husband and I have reached the point we don't HAVE to work at all because of what we have been fortunate to accumulate but still both of us do five or more days a week.  I may retire when I am 65 which is in 5 years but can't see that he will ever do that because his work is so much his life and when he is no longer able physically to do it I can see him directing others which of course he already does now in directing those who work for him.

I've always been a worker... I have always worked longer and harder than my colleagues in all my jobs.. it's just how I am.. in my college course, I am aware that I put in much more effort than my peers, I read a lot more and research more than others and spend a lot longer working on it.. .when I passed my driving test, I would practice for hours and hours and hours...

And yet, in this one thing, I would so love just to be able to fall into this thing I need to do... partly because I have so many other difficulties going on, like in my job, and partly because falling into it would only be one aspect, I'd still have to work hard to stay there and to prove myself...

Some people just have to keep striving to do better and to become better.  If I'd been handed a college education I would still have striven go farther and be better than I am.  You'd think that once you reach a certain level, you'd spike the ball and do a victory dance.  That may be true for some people, but not for others.  I heard recently that even among surgeons there is competition to do more operations and develop more new techniques than the others.  For us there is no end to striving to accomplish good, better things for ourselves and others.  On the other hand, taking what is handed to them is all some people know.  I've know such people as well.

In me old age it would be nice if everything did fall into my lap but then I would have to get up and put it away.

Like that old saying "If everything is coming your way, you're in the wrong lane!"

Depends on what was falling on my lap. Like you, for instance. (Sorry...I couldn't pass this one up. It kinda fell on my lap.)

Right now in my life, yes.  I need a financial break.  A few days ago I screwed up my already bruised rotator cuff in my left shoulder.  It has made it really hard since my job requires my strength and abilities in all of my limbs simultaneously.
Grrr and Ugh all at the same time.  I'm sure I'll heal; but, I can't wait that long and every day is a painful one.  Sleeping isn't any easier.
