If you knew you would be poor to the point of struggling for a year ahead, maybe 2 - but that it was for the greater good.. would you do it?
Is sometimes the short term pain worth the long-term gain? Could you do it? Even down to that your family will have to eat less well? And every penny would count?
I am honoured to have asked a question you cannot imagine an answer to - you often cause my poor old brain cells to overwork :P I was thinking of something like, having to pay tuition fees, taking a student loan, having to pay expenses while studying, having to cut back the hours one is working in order to study. In this way one would encounter personal sacrifice in terms of time pressures, especially if one had to work in a placement for free to gain experience, and financial sacrifice in terms of less money coming in but working harder than ever but much more money going out.. The greater good would be that one would be 'qualified' and have professional standing... Another example might be when one starts up a business.. in the early days little money coming in, working all hours and lots of start-up expenses...- the greater good being that one may have a successful business at the end..
I've never been rich with money but always rich with love. Struggling another year or two financially would not be new ground. If I can help, I will.

Yes but you would have to prove to me just how that would be for the "greater good". Obviously many dreams do necessitate sacrifice but that would be of a more personal nature. A lot of "the greater good" for some people just means they get the money while the people they get it from sacrifice and go without.
Interesting response. I would think that those who sacrificed financially for the greater good, only then to take advantage of others sacrifices - aren't very nice people.. greedy,, motivated by money and little else.. I wasn't really sure how to relate to that kind of scenario.. Dreams can involve financial sacrifice too - trust me.
Given that "for the greater good" usually means "for the good of society" ... I would have to be shown how my personal sacrifice was going to benefit society, and what guarantee I had that it actually would. (not some politician's promise)
If it was for my personal good ... I would have to measure if the ROI was worth it. To use your example of education ... would the education guarantee me a far better job? No guarantee, and I'm probably not going to take the risk of wasting the money.
No. If a political party made a policy that would require me to sacrifice for the greater good by paying a lot of money for something so someone else can have it but I can no longer afford it I'd definitely vote against them in the next election.
