If someone is respectful towards you, how do they speak and behave?

We often take it for granted that we know what respect is, but often people have different personal or cultural ideas about how it is expressed.

What does it connote for you personally?

    I had tended to think of it the other way round.
    That everyone deserves respect by virtue of being self-aware and capable of suffering:
    respect for their rights, feelings, boundaries and needs.
    I find if one treats others with respect, most people respond in kind.

    You make an interesting point, Beans - thank you.
    I think I can see what you mean...
    In self-respect, a person sets their boundaries clearly and does not allow others to mistreat them. 
    They also take responsibility for their emotions, words, actions and consequences.
    And that kind of maturity naturally attracts respect from others.
