When’s the last time you had a financial setback or unexpected costs?

Mine was today. I took my car in for what I thought was simple brake pads and rotor replacements. It was much worse. I needed new calipers, rotors, brakes, hydraulic hoses, and cylinders. There went about $1,400. Everything was shot. I knew my brakes were bad, but not that bad. This is the first time I ever let something go this long without repairs or replacements on a vehicle. I’m ashamed I let it get this bad.

Yes, I messed up my list. I should have looked at my receipt when typing my list. To sum it up, everything needed replacing on the front and rear ends. Brakes, rotors, cylinders, calipers, and hydraulic brake hoses.

I used to do my own car repairs, but that was in the 60s - 80s. The car I have today needs a new horn...I can't even find it.

I find new cars almost un repairable...you have to strip away so much stuff to get to one tiny electronic bit...plus that tiny bit cost a fortune....
You need to upgrade tool box every week to ,you need so many special little gizmos to unasemble things ....finding nuts and hide bolts is impossible without a manual....
My brothers friend works on Mecedes ...every month he has to upgrade his diagnostic and fault finding computer ...That's £1000 a month or more....

That's why there are mechanics. It's easier to take it to the shop and pay them.

How working people afford to have repairs done in main  dealerships is beyond me....

BMW charge £150 per hour plus 20 % VAT Tax ...:(

I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but it’s almost like they purposely make new vehicles to where you can’t do repairs yourself unless you’re a mechanic. My dad and uncle used to do their own repairs, their own maintenance,  and help others. With the newer vehicles they take them in.

Dealerships don't want people repairing their own cars or vehicles...American cars would run forever and they made different new models to attract new buyers....modern cars are scrapped after 100,000 miles as the electronics begin to fail and they become uneconomic to repair....

My dad had a huge GMC Rambler Ambasador estate with ten seats I think....it was built like a tank ,but had some kind of fibre valve timing wheels ...it's jumped a cog through wear ...it was six litres and use to really roar away ....lol

It had a two way tail gate and both my sisters use to sit together in the back facing the rear and play with whoever pulled up behind us....We had people in hysterics with our antic's...lol
The tailgate had an electric window....The car was gold with a wood patten bottom...

Cadillac made a V10 or V12 monster that could run with no oil in it.....if it got to hot so many cylinders would shut down  until they cooled and then start again while others cylinders rested

  • The guy who picks up my refuse said he didn't get my payment so I had to pay twice.  I pay in stashed cash so no way to prove he didn't.

30 years ago back when I didn't have a book keeper and a money manager. I'm stupid with money so my wife started managing our money and we have been in the black ever since. Cheers!.

Last setback - 2008. Lost everything except home, land and what's on it.

Latest big cost, replacing the rotten fence on the west boundary.
