DO you have any specific or fond memories of a particular book of film?

Harry Potter was on tv this evening... HP always reminds me of my middle child, who was very young at the time, had Dyslexia, and had never read a book. I remember his teacher who was fond of him and encouraged him and inspired him to read Harry Potter, which had only just come out, (as the book). So that was the first time I saw him read something for himself and love it..

I can truly say I have strong feelings for everything I've read by:

    Flannery O'Connor
    Shirley Jackson
    Raymond Carver
    John Wyndham

But I have a myriad of memories for director George Romero's original 1968 movie "Night of the Living Dead" and the excellent book/novelization of the movie by co-screenplay author John Russo. The memories I have revolving around that book (I read the book about a year before I saw the movie) have lasted a lifetime, including trips to where the movie was filmed and meeting and talking with many cast members -- and way more stuff beyond that.

The movie scared the daylights out of me terribly  --  and still does. So excellent!

A scene from the movie is my avatar.

  • I was about five or six years old when that movie came out.  We saw it at a drive-in with my parents I think. SCARY. I loved it.   Romero was a master.

The first time I saw it was at a drive-in, too, Benedict-Whoever-You-Are/Were!
    Yeah, Romero rocks.

I came across this movie late one night and was thrilled because I am a former motorcycle mechanic and racer like the story featured in 'The World's Fastest Indian'.

“Trains Plains and Automobiles”, it was one of my paternal grandfather’s favorite movies. I watched thst mice so many times with him. It always brings back memories of him. “Ace Ventura Pet Detective” is another one simply because I have watched it hundreds of times and I still crack up laughing. I love that movie. Very funny!

One of my favorite lines goes something like [a conversation between John Candy and Steve Martin] :

"How cold do you think it is?"
    "One."

Something like that? They're in the back cab of a truck, getting a ride.

It’s one of those you’ll like it or hate it. I find it hysterical.

I can understand that. That's sort of the way Jim Carrey strikes me -- sometimes I find him hysterically funny and sometimes I don't. But he's always interesting for sure!
I really like him (and the rest of the cast) on the show "In Living Color."

I loved "In Living Color," too. SO funny!
He was in some horror movie, too -- can't remember the title, something about a hotel room - - and I was really impressed with his non-comedy side. Oh, and he was in a made-for-TV drama movie "Doing Time on Maple Drive." Great movie, he was great in that, too.

I've not seen too many of his comedies I guess, once I think about it. Hmm . . . need to maybe look into more of his stuff.

And on "In Living Color" I really like when he does that female bodybuilder "Vera DeMilo." Ha!
    :)

The book Screamy Mimi reminds me of my childhood. I don't remember the actual story, but the book had a strong scent that I absolutely loved. I often just opened it to take a sniff, that smell still sticks in my mind but the book has long since vanished.

  • I like Cocoon (the first one).  It came out in 1985, but I didn't see it until last year.  Neat picture show.

  • In elementary school on "Library Day", I discovered the world of Mrs. Piggle Wiggle - a series of books written by Betty MacDonald.  I believe her books were a little before my time, but I didn't care.  Every week I looked forward to checking out yet another Mrs. Piggle Wiggle book.  I just loved them.  All of them.    About a year ago, I bought three of them - they are still just as fun as I recall.  I can't wait until my grandchild is born so that I can read the books to him/her.
