I can't think of one that annoys me as I am used to it. Imagine a Frenchman ( whose spelling is incredibly complex) trying to read English. Olde English writers got paid by the letter, so they added letters to the words. I like fonetik languages like German and Russian. Have a great day.

The English language is a baffling thing.  Ain't it?

Because English is a mishmash of loan words from many different languages, spelling was not standardized until recently in history, and pronunciations flow and shift over time and geography, to the extent that we don't even have a single English language, but a large collection of English dialects.

  • "Busy" is probably the one that gets me the most. There is no other similarly-spelled lexeme with this pronunciation. How it developed given this spelling isn't clear to me.
