At any time in your life, have your parents* ever expressed hatred for each other? If so, how did that affect you personally?

*Either your biological parent(s), any stepparent(s) you may have had, the people or person who raised you, or any other person(s) you consider as being a parent of yours.

I rarely even heard my mother and step-father talk to one another and neither ever talked to me about their relationship. It's like I never had parents at all.

We certainly had some challenges as a family and my parents together had some, too. But I can honestly say I never heard my parents ever express hatred for each other.

No. I never heard that kind of talk by my parents before or after their divorce.

My Dad and Step Mom never said anything like that either. I have seen them argue before....that was very uncomfortable as a kid.  Once in my late teens my Dad got off the phone with her and said "Don't be surprised if they were divorced soon."  He was really surprised that it upset me. That was over 25 yrs ago. They are still married.

Oh my gosh yes. I don't think I ever heard a kind thing. The things that went back and forth were awful.

It's hard to say how much it impacted me. The things they said were usually true. That was probably worse.

"Oh, boy, here we go again!!".

That's about as much emotion I felt about it.

I’m a bit confused; is the portion you put in quotes what one of them said to the other, or is it your utterance?

At nine years old, I witnessed my father trying to drown my mother in the swimming pool.
There were mornings after rows when she has bruises and cuts on her brow.

Once he said, "I love your mother but by God she's stupid."
It was a weird way to phrase it for a fanatical atheist.

When I grew up, sadly, I realised he was right. My mother couldn't think for herself.
But she was canny; she had an instinct for character. She paid experts with integrity to think for her, and that helped her survive where most practical matters were concerned.

I've never ever heard my parents arguing,my dad is huge and my mum is tiny plus feisty and petite like me.....my dad has always known it would be an act of utter lunacy for him to upset her...
I think you must have a pretty good understanding of that by now though.... :)D

Was more what they didn't say than what they did.  They felt they had made their choice and eventually that they were stuck with one another come what may. There was a lot of mutual disappointment in one another.  As to how I was affected I would say that could be a reason I did not marry until I was 53, though I did come pretty close at about 40.  I think I felt I would eventually disappoint anyway so why worry about it.  I just went with what seemed to be working and did not think of things like well if it would last for ever.  Perhaps I learned to appreciate the good moments all the more.
