Looking back, perhaps it was my unconscious ability of staying "in the moment" of enjoying everyone (mostly) around me and learning all sorts of things.
The last two years (before college) were quite a lot of fun, because I liked everyone in all my classes (and teachers finally stopped treating us like problems). It felt great to be able to joke around with three dozen people who were all different. And I'm still grateful to those who showed me they could combine good grades with sports and a generally relaxed approach to life.
I didn't like any part of school. Not even the times when teachers could beat the students. That was all grade school stuff, but it pissed me off. In addition to that, I couldn't do the math at any grade and I still don't know how I passed every grade.
When my siblings and I reached middle school age, our parents decided that we should attend Catholic school. There was none in our town so we learned to take city buses to and from the schools in the city. As a young kid, this was very empowering. I learned how to negotiate the city and get to where I wanted to go. I also liked meeting a more diverse group of fellow students.
