Got a good side to Trump’s tariff rhetoric?

Trump’s tariff treats have sparked a new sense of pride in Canada. 70% of Canadians are feeling more patriotic since Trump started his tariff treats. But you can’t put food on the table with pride – so Canada and Canadians are in the process of being less dependent on trading with the US. And in the long run I think that’s a good thing. Cheers!

If Canada becomes a state, they will have 54 electoral votes. Sooner or later, Team Trump will see the downside, unless they have some other nefarious plan for future elections .

The MAGA base actually believes this is about immigration and drugs crossing the Northern border. Some think it's about the trade deficit. It is not. It is about weakening Canada.  I am glad to see that Canada is standing strong.

Standing strong is a good thing but it is also a self preservation economy kind of thing. And I bet I few other Countries are doing the same thing. Cheers!

If Canada becomes a state with 54 electoral votes, the Republicans will never be in power again.  That could be a good thing.  However, Trump did say that if he was elected again, we wouldn't have to have any more elections, so there's that.

A more secure border is more than a point to me.

Are you willing to pay more than a dollar more for gas (no more cheap Canadian oil from the Alberta tar sands) and see large scale load shedding across upper NY state, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire and Minnesota when Canada shuts the power off as well?

    We can drill our own.

And better than having an open border all day.

You can't possibly drill enough to meet local demand. Not cheaply. And try living without electricity for a few days like your entire north-east will have to if Trump gets his way. This post was edited by Slartibartfast at February 9, 2025 9:54 PM MST

You are wrong, we were energy independent under Trump before and can be again.  We can also use other methods for energy.

What many people don't understand is that all oil is not the same. Yes, we drill enough oil, but it isn't all oil that we have refineries that can handle it. There is a reason we import oil, even though we export more than we import. Canada has the type of oil we need, the pipelines exist to get it to the refineries and because of that Canada gives us a better price. The oil we get from fracking is different and among other things, sells for more, so we export it. To stop oil imports, we would need to build or convert refineries and build pipelines or use other transport. I may not be explaining this properly, but there is lots of information out there.

I wonder how many years that will take and whether the enormous cost will affect consumers.

It is dumb to not have refineries that process the oil we drill in our own country.
We already pay for refineries now, etc now.

During his first term Trump’s boost to infrastructure week was privatizing air traffic controllers. So maybe building needed oil refiners infrastructure is not a priority this time either. Cheers!

Maybe we will use all that tariff money to build those refineries.
I have no problem with air traffic controllers being privatization.   I just want them to be capable of doing the job regardless of the race, color,  gender etc.

    Maybe.

Or maybe Trump will remove the tariffs after a couple of weeks like he did last time. And maybe little Timmy won’t be getting a birthday present because his family had to pay 25% more for building material for a couple of weeks. I like to think little Timmy will understand – but it is still kind of sad.

    Cheers!

The oil companies build refineries. It really isn't cost effective to refine the oil we drill and then export, versus the oil we import. Oil companies are in it for profit. If they were to convert their refineries, consumers would pay the expense. I posted a video down below that explains the issue pretty clearly.

That’s good to hear because now I’m thinking little Timmy will be getting a birthday present.
I think Trump is playing tariff games. And I think a lot countries are getting sick of it – and those countries will work together to beat Trump at his own game. Cheers!

You do know the tarriffs on Canada did not go into effect because Canada claims they will secure the border, right?

Good for Canadians!  The bully is using tariffs (and the threat thereof) to get his way (his motto is - "my way or the highway").  The more nations that stand up to him and his stupidity the better.

Papa's got a brand new bag.
Trump is now using bullying tactics to get countries to give him their rare minerals. He is doing it to the Ukraine - one of their rare minerals is the stuff to make batteries for EV’s. Smells a little fishy to me because Musk needs the stuff to make batteries for EV’s. Cheers!
