What do you do yourself that most people pay to have done for them?

Is it because you are frugal, because you are good at it or some other reason?

Those are whiney-worthy life experiences.  I do hope your mom will be OK.  I'm lucky to still have my mother around............well, 700 miles away.   She's 85 this year.   And I'm sorry you lost your dad.  Take time to just feel the sad and sorrow.  It's real and it's yours.  We're here though.  :)

Thanks ,THriftymaid. I shold have added that mom is out of the hospital  -- she was admitted for pneumonia -- and now she is residing in a residential setting getting various therapies to strengthen her.  she's getting better. I still worry though. Thank you for your kindness- - I'm not taking care of myself, I admit, through all of this. Or allowing myself to feel my own feelings. I'm too concerned about others' thoughts/feeligns maybe.
    Sorry for all the typos.
    :)

You must have a different definition of loser than I do. Just because you don't cut your own hair, it doesn't make you a loser. :) In fact, your kindness and compassion come through in all your posts and those qualities are much more valuable than being able to change the oil in your car.

  • Slashing paddocks.
Weeding - on 64 acres where the subtropical climate makes things grow unbelievably fast.
    Household repairs.

    Financial necessity.
Don't have enough income to pay someone to do them.
I hate farm work and would gladly pay for it if I had the cash. This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at January 22, 2018 8:09 AM MST

I guess it's kind of a trade-off for living where you do. I hope it's worth it!

I guess I'd have to say exercise and physical fitness in general.  I don't pay gym fees or employ a personal trainer, I do it all on inertia, adrenaline and self-motivation.  I'm too cheap to pay someone to get me into shape or to maintain my level of fitness.

I wish I could motivate myself like that. If I weren't paying for a personal trainer, I would spend my time thinking up excuses instead of working out.

Do you find it effective to pay a personal trainer, Jane S?

I consider it best money I ever spent.  He not only keeps me motivated and accountable, he tailors the workouts to my goals, makes sure I am doing them correctly, and we have such a good rapport that the sessions are actually enjoyable.

I usually fix my own car and truck and do my own oil changes.

  • "I cut my own hair."

Reason:  I went to the local beauty salon
and the owner's hair looked like this!

I don't understand why that would make a difference. :)

  • I'm sure she had the skill, I was just a little worried about her apparent obsession with creativity. :)

    Not nearly enough.

I wish I could fix my own car and house.

Wouldn't that be nice? When I was poor, I did some home repairs like installing a faucet or hanging a light fixture. But I didn't really like doing it, so now I pay for that. I would still pay for car repairs, but I'd like to know when/if I really need them instead of just trusting the mechanic's advice.

Rather than pay, I would rather do anything almost myself.  I just never have enough money it seems.

Well my husband and I alternate massaging each other.  Not I guess a professional massage but quite effective and adequate.  No I could afford them but I think nice to share with each other.

OfficeGirl, that's certainly one expense I wish I could avoid making. I work out a lot and I rubbed a lot, so I need and wants a rundown more often than my wife does. I'm more into getting massages than is my wife, but we've never been any good at giving them to each other. She's not patient enough to do it, and I'm not as well versed in giving them as the professionals are. (Translated to English: when I try to give her a full-body massage, I get worn out after just a few minutes.). I do well with just her feet, legs or neck, but anything more than or when it goes more than fifteen minutes.

I guess neither of us would feel comfortable getting them professionally.  Actually all started years ago with a boyfriend who would massage my feet and hands.  I was 18 and then he had me after a while do the same to him.  So have just done it automatically to boyfriends long as they were comfortable with it which most were.  But not all reciprocated! Showed my husband by example how to do it.  Have done full body massages though I have no specific training except just giving them ( and when I moonlighted as an escort I did offer them for $$ ).  Mostly one of us will do the other's say feet and legs one evening, then another hands, or scalp or back so they are not really whole body massages but just sectional or partial I guess they could be called. He's very good with me and very strong so really helps relieve muscle tension so I feel all lighter and tingly. Very pleasurable and I would say therapeutic.   Maybe around a half-hour each time.  Guess we both have the strength AND the patience!
