Uh - - and WHY was "Forrest Gump" supposedly such a great movie? ;)

This is just a joke question.
I am one of only two human beings I know of who doesn't like this movie. The other one is an answerMugger, too.

I only saw bits and pieces of it, including the last scene. I thought it was pretty good. Hanks was a genius as usual.

That's what I kept reading and being told --  how great Hanks was in the lead role. And I found him to be terribly annoying and irritating. Like I told Danilo_G --  Hanks seemed to be reeking with "Look at me, I'm 'acting.'"

Maybe I just watched the movie on the wrong day for me. I know I'm way off from what most everyone else says.

Make that three. I hate it. Jenny was a terrible person.

Even at three, we are definitely in the minority.

I don't even remember the details of Jenny -- I just kept wanting for the movie to end and it just kept going on and on. "Stop, Forrest, Stop."

My wife brought the movie home and I was bored. I have never watched it since.

Bored was another reaction I had to it, too. Maybe I just watched it on the wrong day of my life.

That from a woman who was abused by her own father? Victims of sexual abuse all react differently. Many suicide - Jenny seriously contemplated it. Forrest didn't understand her, no man really can but it was much harder for a guy so obviously retarded.
The way I interpreted it, Jenny was raped repeatedly by her father until she was able to escape, and spent the rest of her life battling the demons in her head. She wasn't a bad person, just a seriously damaged one, and Forrest got caught in the crossfire.

It's had a good run for the last 24 year......I hear that they are renaming the film now to MarathonMan because Tom Hanks really went through the Wars making it.......:)D

Didn't watch it until the end. Can understand why others do like it, but to me it's only one of those sentimental movies focused on eliciting some emotions, without (aesthetic) significance. The most popular works tend to be that: formally filled with cliches but just about fresh enough to appeal greatly to a broad audience.

Great lead performance, though; haven't heard anyone argue against that.

    Well-put.

And here's where I get in trouble, yikes - - I found Hanks to be irritating and annoying in the lead role. "Look at me, I'm 'acting.'"

Haha, that is a valid point. Actors usually shouldn't generate the impression that they're trying to prove themselves, if that's what bothered you. You're welcome, Welby!

And the movie just kept going on and on. I've liked various lengthy movies but Gump just didn't hold my interest.

Why does that link start out by asking, "How can this movie be THE WORST"? I've never ever heard anyone call it the worst movie.
    :)

(Even though I don't like it that much at all.) I did like Sally Field's part as his mother.

    Sorry for being a grump.

    Thanks, tom jackson.

I think it was a great movie because it probably  saved my life  a couple of times Before I saw the movie I thought there was only one way to cook shrimp (deep fried in batter) but Bubba showed me there are 1000's of ways and most of those ways were healthier then my way - so I didn't wind up having a heart attract  from eating too much deep fried battered shrimp.  Another time a Biker Chick was going to kick my butt - but when she asked me if I was stupid I said - stupid is as stupid does, Turned out Forest Gump was her favorite movie so instead of her kicking my butt we wound  up having a beer and a few laughs together. Cheers!

That sounds like a very Forrest-Grumpian Thing to have happened in your life with both the shrimp and the biker!

    Thanks, Nanoose.

I did like it, and still do. OK, "the nice and practical idiot" is a trite trope, but I think he did it excellently.

And I'm the idiot who just didn't see it that way. Everyone has been giving good reasons for the movie.
I'm just not a fan, it seems.

It demonstrated how a life full of access and opportunity can be had under even the most unfortunate circumstances when born with privilege and with privilege and just good character the sky is the limit no matter the handicap. It is a revealing story of society then and now. The movie indoctrinates on a sub conscious level  that privilege should be maintained as a social safety net to prevent failure.
