    I would disagree.
It's good to be polite, don't get me wrong, but sometimes people are almost too nice.
Like, they're so ridiculously polite that they seem to be keeping up appearances.
I noticed that in the long-term care facility that my grandmother was in.
A few of the workers there were really over the top polite and would call me dear when I was there.
My grandmother was scared of some of them and I think sometimes you should watch out for people who pretend to be super nice.
They may have a polar opposite side.

This question also kind of reminds me of the saying "Going to church doesn't make you a good person anymore than standing in a garage makes you a Cadillac."
Being a nice person to me means trying not to hurt others.
    Living your life that way.

WOW! The guy behind the counter was probably thinking, "Is this really happening to me?  He has got to be kidding!"  I like the fact he, in turn, thanked the guy robbing him.  I was really amazed the whole thing went down and didn't forget his coffee before he walked out the door!
    Perfect example Beans!

    Polite does not mean nice.

    Polite means being respectful
    Nice means being pleasant.

Your protagonist has never been to Las Vegas. Everybody in Vegas is very polite while they are trying to get your money.

As it was explained to me: "People in Vegas are friendly, but they're not your friends!" This post was edited by Not Sure at June 30, 2018 9:55 AM MDT

Some people use politeness to gain your CONfidence.  Then they con you out of your money.  I know one polite person who had two children that he pretty much abandoned.  That was definitely not good.

Polite does not mean they are a nice person.

Its nice when people are polite, so I guess, on the surface, polite people are nice people.

Semantically that makes sense to me.
    :)
.But I tend to think politeness does not automatically make someone nice. Some of the people in the group in which he said this did not agree with him.
    :)
You're right, though, it's nice when people are polite.

I would tend to believe they were a nice person if they were polite.  Shoot, I get happy! happy! when someones says please and if they happen to throw in a thank-you, I am elated!!

I tend to always look for the best in people, too. And if there's no reason to doubt their word, I tend to believe people.

Being polite is free and helps you get along with people.

However, it is therefore part of the stock in trade of con artists as well.
