    I would just say "oh sorry -i'll leave so you can talk some more about me". And usually one of them talking nasty about me owes me money so I might also interject "by the way,  you got that $20 you owe me?"

    Let's just say this. 

    When I am finished, they will make sure CERTAIN that I cannot HEAR them the next time they gossip about me or anyone.

    Trust me.  I know how to play this one like a master.

    The old me would have told them all off. The new me would calmly gain their attention and say, “You all could at least have the decency and courage to tell me to my face how you feel.” I then would walk away. I’ve learned most people will talk about you behind your back and never to your face. I just don’t care these days. I’m not on earth for a popularity contest.

    I'd walk in -- still be myself - - act as if everything were kosher - - and let THEM be the ones to feel awkward.
