I HATE clowns. I don’t know why. They creep me out. I‘m not at all nervous in a max custody cell house with 150-160 inmates, but I hate clowns. The last one that appraoached me was given a descriptive warning of the violence which would occur if he didn’t go away.

I knew it existed, just the actual term. I remember being terrified of them as a child. There were rumors a man dressed as a clown was abducting children. This certainly didn’t help. I never found out if the rumors were true. This was long before the internet was around. I always found their appearance odd. Their personalities seem to be off. They come across as creepy and hidden intentions. I’m glad that clown’s sake I spoke about above left me alone. I would have ended up in jail. But I was terrified and was ready to give a beatdown. When my adrenaline rushes I don’t feel pain and I go into an extra 6th gear.
It's not such an unreasonable fear for a small child - they look completely different to other people, behave in exaggerated, crazy and unpredictable ways in the pursuit of humor, and some of their slapstick is quite violent. As to the rumors - they were not so crazy either; paederasts often choose professions that will give them easy and trusted access to lots of children.
Whenever I saw clowns as a child, it was only at a safe distance in the audience of a circus, so they didn't affect me the same way. I avoid horror films, including the ones that star clownish villains, like Jack Nicholson as the Joker in Batman. Even the trailers were enough to turn me off!

I laughed until I teared up when I saw that picture. I had the plague, global thermonuclear war, total economic collapse on my mind and then there was that picture. Thanks a lot.
I share your fear. At my local McDonald's there's a wooden clown mascot sprawled on a bench. He looks like he would spring to life any moment which really freaks me out. My boyfriend and I once sat on that bench waiting for a table to get free. I got him to sit between me and that clown, and was still very nervous all the time.

A movie came to my mind first. "The Innocents" from 1961.
I remember as a youngster staying up to watch this movie after everyone in my family was asleep - I had seen it advertised and planned on sneaking down from my bedroom to watch. And the movie TERRIFIED me!! I was annihilated with fear and when the movie was over I was too afraid to go back upstairs to my room and I slept the rest of the night on the floor outside my parents' bedroom.
The movie still scares me a lot. What a great movie!!!
