I've told this story before ------ when I was about 10 y.o., I was cleaning my grandparent's basement. There was a large, old, dusty cabinet and shelves jammed full of old-style mason fruit jars full of strawberry jam. Grandpa was an enthusiast of growing strawberries and my mother was really into canning the stuff. I ate 'peanut butter and strawberry jam' sandwiches for lunch throughout elementary school. Anyway, I moved some items and opened the dusty old cabinet. Naturally, the cabinet was full of mason fruit jars. Dozens of them! But there was no jam in these jars, oh no! Each jar was full of old silver dollars and some other dimes, nickles, and quarters! The following day, all the coins were counted out and deposited in my grandparent's bank account. (all coins were before 1960) The total was in the thousands of dollars. Grandpa had saved all his loose change from many years in business, and had never bothered to put it in the bank, no doubt he was from the Great Depression era, and didn't trust banks.
