What has gotten way too expensive for you to indulge in?

  • I used to love going on short road trips, but our gas prices here in California, especially the Bay Area, are off the chain.  That, and then just knowing that hitting crazy traffic even on an early Sunday morning, makes me reconsider. Owning wheels.

I drive my brother's pickup because he doesn't use it. It wouldn't start so I magnanimously offered to pay for a mechanic. That cost six hundred bux. For six hundred bux I could have hired a cab every week for a year, and I don't go to town every week.

In Russia they ran "Grapes Of Wrath" to show the people how workers were downtrodden in America. What the people saw was that in America even the poorest family could own a car. Well, that's not true any more.

I can't think of anything I've had to give up because it's too expensive.

Organic food.   But, I must totally abide by not eating anything sprayed or grown in chemical soil or irradiated.

So, I have to buy organic.  I am currently learning to grow my own wheatgrass, sprout seeds and nuts and grains to save money and in general trying to not get sick and die.

  • "Television"  ... I hear that back in the old days it used to be free.

It was free but there weren't nearly as many stations as there are now.  "over the air" stations are still free so long as you don't need a cable hookup to get reception.  We had antennas on the roof of our building that connected to the TV set and bingo - you got TV reception.  Now, many buildings don't permit that.

  • I thought that the industry changed the TV signals, somehow, so that the old style antennas no longer worked.

Regardless ... thanks for your input.  Happy Holidays!

You may be right.  It's been a long time since I've had an antenna on the roof.  When I moved into this building 40 years ago, there was a building antenna that we hooked into for $20 a year.  When cable became the big new invention, they did away with the building hookup for anyone who wasn't already hooked up and after 9/11 when there were no broadcast signals from the Twin Towers, we all had to get cable.

My investment strategy fell through last quarter, so I can't afford to put a tilde at the end of each post any more.

It is going to be ok, the ones you have now will have more time to reproduce.  By spring you will have added a few more generations.  You'll see, it will be fine.

Thank you, MorningStar. You're the only one who cares. (Sniff, sob.)

As I see it, we are talking a matter of value for the money spent.

For me, it is attending pro sporting events. For reasonably good seats at a recent Saints game in N.O., my sons and I dropped a grand on seats, food and parking.
I was at a Miami Heat game last season, cost $400, 12 rows back.

I won’t attend movies in the theaters either. No movie I have ever watched  is worth what is being charged for theater admission anymore.
My home theater has paid for itself many times over.

I'm with Don - a beer at the cricket costs ten bucks. I'll add concerts to that - attended plenty as a teen and young adult, but they're ridiculously expensive now unless you can score a freebie entry (sometimes you have to know the right people).

Riding my bike along the beach.  It's just to far from home.  I sure miss it, I'd give anything to be at the beach today.  I like the beach because the bike trails are level and there is always something interesting to look at.  The seagulls calling the fog horn the boats and the light sparking off the water as a wonderful breeze guides you along.  Once you get those bike muscles hills are fun as well.   This post was edited by Art Lover at December 15, 2018 8:35 PM MST

  • Going to the movies has skyrocketed in recent years.  We finally saw a movie Bohemian Rhapsody while my boyfriend was here.  We had not been to the movie in six years!
