  • We had visited Mexico when I was a kid and I thought it would be nice to speak Spanish.  It's not a bad idea now since there are so many people in the US who speak Spanish now.

I have studied Latin, French, Russian, German, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic and Spanish. I quit Arabic when I learned that it is so difficult that even native speakers can't speak it correctly. I actually studied Chinese twice. The first course was thirteen weeks of how to draw the characters, no words. The second course was all vocabulary, nothing about how to compose a sentence. I did not put much effort into any of these because it is quite rare to meet someone who does not prefer to speak English.

I grew up in the middle of an Indian reservation near the Mexican border. At one point a certain politician suggested printing ballots in three languages: English, Spanish, and Indian. He was totally unaware that every Indian tribe has its own language, and they all prefer to discuss politics in English anyway.
