When I was about 8, I saw a scarecrow in a garden. That gave me an idea. I would construct a 'Halloween Dummy Display'. From a tree in front of our rural farm home, I hung, by the neck, a homemade dummy made of old clothes and stuffed with newspaper. My sister came up with the idea of making a dummy dressed as a woman, holding the end of the rope. This gave the impression that she was preforming the murderous act of hanging the man dummy. It musta been a shocking scene in those days. Anyway, the local newspaper came out and took a photo that ran on the front page. In years following this display, area residents began to build their own 'dummy' displays on halloween. The local high school football team held a 'pep rally' on the eve of their big football game with their rivals and hung homemade dummies (in the rivals uniforms) from outhouses (outdoor toilets) that had been stolen from area farms.
Rumour has it ,that it was a rumour ,but that's just gossip and as I said to my friends at the time ,I have no part in talking behind people's back......I told my mum to.... :)
