As if he is a child who cannot possibly make decisions and need the "adults" to think for him. When the donjohn staff undercuts him he doesn't seem to notice it. It happens repeatedly and he seems to be oblivious to it. So the fight he has is the one with his staff who prevent him from deciding what he wants and allowing to do it.
