I think they are gorgeous.  I can see a cartoon character with a palm tree head of hair.  hahaha

You have never seen a tamarisk, sometimes called salt cedar.

Parts of The Grand Canyon are infested with this weed.

There aren't any that grow outside by where I live so I did some research.  The closest place to where palm trees grow outside is ~1330 km / ~820 miles from where I live.  I'm a long way away from any palm trees.

Phoenix has so many palm trees they start to seem like weeds. Yuma has dozens of groves of date palms. But in fact there is only one tiny canyon, fifty miles out in the desert, where native palms grow.

Very few because they are not productive.  People are planting mostly rubber trees around here because of the high demand for latex condoms.

they don't grow naturally in my area but some have been planted 20 years ago and are still around (cold weather has killed a couple of them over the years)

Yes, I live in Southern California. I have also lived I other places that had lots of palm trees: Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines, etc.

There's one in a garden near my own, and more on the sea-front a couple of miles away, here in Southern England.
