What are some things that people do with the back of the hand? ~

Allow for needles to be inserted for saline solutions

Feel their forehead when think have the fever. At least I do that. 

Give compliments. 

Put lipstick or foundation samples on them to see how they look on your skin.

Use it as a reference in expertise (I know <something> like the back of my hand).

If you visit the Sonoran Desert (Western Arizona and adjoining parts of California) you will find that your lips crack and bleed. That is because you are in the habit of licking them when they feel dry. So you learn to stop licking and use the back of your hand instead. The sweat might taste bad at first, but that is only because you never realized how dirty your hands are most of the time.

My grandpa used to hit us on the back side with the back of his hand if we misbehaved.  That's a spanking that doesn't hurt.  :)

Our hands get abused greatly over a lifetime.  I already have arthritis in my hands and go to sleep at night with them aching sometimes.  It is MUCH improved since having surgery on each hand. 

I have had painful IVs in my hands too.  Being low in potassium and having to have the IV in the hand is one of my worst hospital nightmares.  It burned and hurt horribly.
