Did you have to parallel park as part of your road test to get your driver's license?

  • I didn't ask if you could parallel park, that could be taken as a negative-based question, I just wondered if it was part of your test.  Thanks, Sharonna.  :)

  • My youngest daughters test, four years ago.
No adjusting back and forth, only one stop allowed.

No, it was just a three point turn and reversing round a corner in my day.

Btw I can reverse the caravan like the trailer shown (but I never had to take the test on it) and did last time out. Only thing was I forgot to take the caravan step with me. Not to worry, it was 25 years old at least and rusting badly.

  • Thanks, Malizz.  I only used the truck video because i didn't think I'd be able to find one for a car. :)

    Yes but I didn't drive a truck.

  • Thank you for your answer, officegirl.  Sorry if the truck video implied that I was asking about truck testing.  I didn't say anything about a truck in my question. I just thought that it would be easier than finding a video on parking a car.:)

    LOL
I love the diagram of parking a VW Beetle in a full parking space.
When I had a VW Beetle, I never had to back in to a parallel parking spot - since the car is so small.

My first car was a beetle and I had to parallel park it once - on my driving test.

Sure I did. I passed the test my first time trying.

  • Thanks, Zack.  I asked because I've been hearing that some states aren't doing that part of the test any longer.

I found out literally just a few moments ago that my state doesn't require parallel parking either. This means that I got one less headache when I go back to get a new drivers license.

The only parking we did ... was parking the vehicle back in the DMV lot after the test.
And some people didn't have to do that, if they took the driving test in the DMV vehicle and there was someone else waiting.  LOL

  • Hmmm ...  My driver training class furnished the cars, but I didn't realize any DMVs were doing that.  Were they dual-controlled?  Anyway ... thanks for the info and answer, Walt.  :)

I think they may have had a brake for the DMV passenger.  But I can't recall exactly.
I do remember it was an early 70's caddy ... and in pretty poor shape.  I was afraid it was going to break down.

I'm pretty sure this was a conversation during my test:

DMV: "You're not going the speed limit" (on approach to highway, speed limit 45)

ME: "I'm afraid the car will fall apart."

Yes, I am afraid so... and I hated it... I think I clipped the kerb... Hate any kind of reversing :P

I didn't have to do it for my Class 1 driver's license when I was 14.  I had to do it for my Class A commercial driver's license when I was 18. but only the trailer had to be parallel with the cones.
