I have an aunt whose sister-in-law sends chain messages to everyone she knows, and by extension, to many people she doesn’t really know but has their contact information. My wife and I only met her a few times back in the 1990s, we haven’t seen her since. She uses text messages, email, Facebook, Twitter, any form of social media that she can find, and she sends out chain messages about things such as religious, numerology-related, astrological, financial, educational, quality-of-life, child-rearing, recipes, lame jokes, famous quotes, book suggestions, whatever meets her fancy. She’s about 70 to 75 years old, she retired from a tech job a few years ago. If and when we block her on one medium, she crops up a few weeks later on another one. We have never forwarded even one of her chain messages to anyone, in the beginning, we used to tell her that, and it horrified her. Every time we asked her not to include us on her chain mailing lists, she was extremely offended and put out... less

I do not even know all of their childrens’ names, dates of birth or ages. At last count, my eldest sister, four years my senior, is the only grandparent among my siblings and I. Her son fathered one child and her daughter gave birth to two children.

My mother has only one sibling, her younger sister. Aunt Nita* lived not far from us and we spent a lot of time with our cousins until they moved to Texas when I was about 12 years old. They came back a few years later, and had funny accents that we couldn’t understand. Aunt Nita and my mother had similar lifestyles in that they had a string of children by different fathers: my mother was pregnant six times but only five of us lived. Aunt Nita has six children. I have never known my biological father. From age 4 to 14, I had a stepfather, he was the youngest of 8 children, but had been born and raised on the East Coast, his entire family was still there and we only met one of his brothers. When I was about 10 or 11, my stepfather’s brother was in the Air Force and was transferred from overseas to a base located about an hour and a half from where we lived. He had a Thai wife and 6-year-old stepdaughter. We never spent very much time with them.~ less
