    Huw replied to Sexualization/objectification:
Thank you, Believer. My question comes from reading about the too-early "sexualizatiion" of girls, with heavy emphasis upon dress and self-presentation as "sexy". I'd be interested in hearing more from you about this "very long and very complex subject."

    Huw replied to Sexualization/objectification:
Thank you, Tom. My question arises from research I've been doing into "sexualization" which  places very heavy emphasis upon girls' dressing and acting "sexy" -that is, as sexually desirable objects.

I've never cheated... but I've wanted to many times. Except that it would also be cheating on "the other woman" too -and I've always cared too much for both to do that.

It's a movement started by Scott Miller in Ames, Iowa, whose centerpiece is surrounding a really motivated person or family, trapped in poverty, with a circle of middle/upperclass friends to provide encouragement, contacts, information, and other non-monetary assistance to climb out of the "poverty pit". My wife and I have been involved in this for over ten years -we are in our 4th circle at the moment.Learning a really RELEVANT skill is a big help, certainly -but forecasting types of employment is not something our supposed economic experts are very good at. I could go into this at great length. It can be very difficult to move from an impoverished area to a prosperous one. Just consider housing costs, as one example. Our city has hundreds -probably thousands- of abandoned, unsalable houses, which means both that rents here are pretty low and that homeowners who wish to leave can't get anything like decent prices for their houses. "Two things move my heart with awe; Above, the starry heavens, within the moral law."There are two kinds of infinite depth -that is the meaning of "abyss" -which, by the way, is one of the very few ancient Sumerian words surviving into the English language. "The starry heavens" represent one kind -to many, suggestive of God and the infinite richness of His creation. The otheris the utter, endless emptiness of non-being, of death, the wasting of one's life by the rejection of life's creative possibilities -that is, of the "categorical imperative" which is the true meaning of "the moral law." I would call my own reaction to this latter not so much "awe", which for me is inspiring, exciting, moving toward affirmative action, as I would call it "awfulness" -the terror of endlee, pointless deadness.Pardon my wordiness. I just barely remember having heard some of Hitler's speeches as a young teenager, and I've always wondered how sane and decent Germans could have been persuaded by such hate-saturated ranting -but later I learned German, I've watched Nazi propaganda films, I've studied history, and frankly I am shocked by the parallels with tonight's obviously carefully planned performance.

We're going to renew our passports -soon. I strongly advise those of you who are in the LGBT community to do likewise. If you think I'm over-reacting, pay close attention to the rhetoric coming out of Cleveland and look into what the Nazis did to homosexuals.   less

Paleontology tells us that our minds evolved chiefly under press...  morePaleontology tells us that our minds evolved chiefly under pressure to survive in the African veldt just long enough to raise our offspring to reproductive maturity -which is to say, about 25 years. But we've developed a culture, including math and science, that enables us not only to ask bout the origin and destiny of the Universe, but actually to answer at least one of those questions -i.e., the Big Bang. Does this not strike you not only as awesome, but also as pretty mysterious?

About "objectification": We are all objects; that is the price we pay for being able to express ourselves -that is, to make our subjectivity effective in the world. To be able to affect anything else, we must allow ourselves to be affected. This, I think, is what the Buddha meant when he said that the cause of all suffering is desire.
