She is a naturalized US citizen (naturalized as a minor; parents too). In a June 2025 MN House debate, she said her family was "illegal" because her dad falsified paperwork to speed up their refugee entry—but immediately clarified they are all citizens now. She was making a point about her background, not current status.

I wasn’t being sincere when I agreed to it, and I knew that from the start. My conscience got to me, so I withdrew the ill-advised utterance and carried on with my intended endeavors. Grrrrrr. ~
