Unlike daily news stories that leave you dirty and disgusted, the horrors of film noir could fascinate, even soothe and darkly uplift…
Classic film noir (~1940~1950) grew out of German expressionism and then the angst of The Great Depression; “grit and reality, in counterpoint to the American Dream - film noir is all about losers remaining losers.”
Lighting is critical in these haunting classics… “a perfect blend of form and content, where the desperation and hopelessness of the situations is reflected in the visual style, which drenches the world in shadows and only occasional bursts of sunlight…Harsh highlights and expressionist shadows are played to the max.”
So what is going on, why does the fascination now continue long after? Also, what is your favourite, and maybe do you just have some free association?http://www.boxing.com/boxing_film_noir.htmlFirst photo, closing scene from THE BIG COMBO; John Alton crafting many of the iconic images of film noir.Second photo...    less

They pay you, set their belief system on you, sometimes try to control the day, etc. Not all do that, but you really have to click with the parents. The woman I'm helping was nice in the beginning/flexible , but in last couple months has been scattered, and inconsistent. She'd come home late many times, only telling me 15 mins before hand so I basically HAD to stay ... some days I wasn't even scheduled and it was a 'tentative' and when I never heard from her, she'd call me that day saying can you come over now? Never letting me know actual shift ahead of time. I let this go b/c she was usually kind to me and I love the little boy who is so curious, smart. She just had another baby and has not mentioned new pay to me, or even when I'd begin after her maternity leave. She m makes me wake up the toddler each time from his nap even though I don't agree that is helpful for him or th...    less
