Smoke from fires started by nuclear weapons, especially black sooty smoke, would be heated by the sun, lofted into the upper stratosphere and spread globally lasting for years. Cool, dark, dry conditions would prevent crop growth for one season resulting in starvation for many. Additionally massive ozone depletion would allow enhanced ultraviolet radiation to get through . Dying immediately seems preferable to trying to survive a nuclear winter. I guess we won't get to choose how we die once nuclear war begins. SIGH. less
